 Import or export bookmarks

Importing from Firefox or Internet Explorer

Googly Chrome can copy bookmarks and other browser settings from Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Importing from other browsers

To move a bookmark or bookmark folder, click the item on the bookmarks bar and drag it to its new location.

 

Follow these steps:

1. Export bookmarks from any browser as a HTML file and save the file to your computer.
2. Click the Tools menu in Google Chrome.
3. Select Bookmark manager.
4. Click the Tools menu in the manager.
5. Select Import bookmarks.
6. Select the HTML file saved from the first step, then click Open.

The bookmarks from the other browser will now appear as a subfolder within the ‘Other bookmarks’ folder that sits at the end of the bookmarks bar (Ctrl+B).

Exporting from Google Chrome

Follow these steps:

1. Click the Tools menu in Google Chrome.
2. Select Bookmark manager.
3. Click the Tools menu in the manager.
4. Select Export bookmarks.
5. Choose a location where you want your exported file to be saved, name your file, then click Save.

Google Chrome will export your bookmarks as a HTML file.

Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+B

If you want to see a list of all your bookmarks and edit or manage them, use the bookmark manager. To open it, click the Tools menu and select Bookmark manager. Use the folder list on the left side of the manager to quickly browse your bookmark folders. Additionally, the Tools menu provides options for exporting and importing bookmarks.

Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+B

The bookmarks bar can sit at the top of the browser window to let you easily access your bookmarks. To show, or dock, the bookmarks bar at the top of the window, click the Tools menu and select Always show bookmarks bar. Select this option again if you want to hide the bookmarks bar. If undocked, you can always find the bar by opening the New Tab page (Ctrl+T).

Delete bookmarks

Find the bookmark or bookmark folder that you’d like to remove on the bookmark bar (Ctrl+B) or bookmarks manager (Ctrl+Shift+B). Right-click the item and select Delete.

If you delete a bookmark folder, you also delete all the bookmarks contained within the folder.

If you’re on the bookmarked webpage already, click the highlighted star icon on the address bar. In the bubble that appears, click the Remove link.

Edit bookmarks

You can edit a bookmark’s name, web address, and folder properties, as well as a bookmark folder’s name. Simply right-click the bookmark or bookmark folder on the bookmarks bar and select Edit.

If you’re in the bookmarks manager (Ctrl+Shift+B), follow these steps:

1. Select the bookmark or bookmark folder you’d like to edit.
2. Click the Organize menu.
3. Select Edit.
4. Make your changes.
5. Click OK.

Create bookmarks

Chances are you visit some websites on a regular basis. By creating a bookmark, you place a button for the webpage on the bookmarks bar that lets you easily return to the webpage later on. You can create bookmarks in several ways.

Click the star

This is the easiest way to create a bookmark: click the star icon on the toolbar to create a bookmark. A bubble confirming the addition of the bookmark appears.

• To tweak the bookmark’s name, edit the text in the ‘Name’ field.
• By default, the bookmark is filed in the bookmark folder that was most recently used. Use the ‘Folder’ drop-down menu to choose where you want to store the bookmark. Learn more about managing bookmarks.
• To tweak the bookmark’s exact URL, click the Edit button.

If you accidentally clicked the star icon, you can quickly revert by clicking the Remove link in the bubble.

Manually add the web address

If you know the web address of the page you want to save, add it to your bookmark collection:

You can quickly create a bookmark for any link on your current webpage by clicking and dragging it to the bookmarks bar.

Manage your bookmarks

Use the bookmark manager (Ctrl+Shift+B) to get your bookmarks and folders organized. Here are a few pointers on using the bookmark manager:

• Search bookmarks
  Use the search box at the top to quickly locate a bookmark within the manager.
• Browse bookmarks
  Click the folders on the left side to quickly browse the bookmarks contained in each folder.
• Move bookmarks or folders around
  Simply click the item you want to move and drag it to its new destination within the folder list on the left.
• Edit the name or web address of a bookmark, or a folder name
  Select the item you’d like edit, click the Organize menu, then select Edit. You can also easily edit bookmarks and folders from the bookmarks bar by right-clicking the item in question and selecting Edit.
• Add a new bookmark folder
  In the folder list on the left, right-click the location where you want the new folder to reside and select Add folder
• Delete a bookmark or folder
  Right-click the item and select Delete.

Organization tips

Choose a logical bookmark location

When you first click the star icon to create a bookmark, remember to select a folder location for it by using the drop-down menu in the bookmark bubble that appears. The five most recently used bookmark folders appear in the menu. If the folder you want to use doesn’t appear as an option, select Choose another folder to open the ‘Edit Bookmark’ dialog box.

To move a bookmark or bookmark folder, click the item on the bookmarks bar and drag it to its new location.

Clean up unused bookmarks

If you don’t need a bookmarked webpage anymore, you can delete the bookmark. Or file it in the ‘Other bookmarks’ folder at the end of the bookmarks bar if you want to keep the bookmark around, but out of sight.

Import browser settings

During installation, Google Chrome can copy your browsing history, saved websites, and passwords from your default browser. You can also manually import settings from Firefox or Internet Explorer at any time. Follow these steps:

1. Close any other browsers that you’re running.
2. Open Google Chrome.
3. Click the Tools menu.
4. Select Import bookmarks & settings.
5. Select the browser from which you’d like to import data from the drop-down menu at the top.
6. Make sure only the checkboxes for items you want to import are selected:
   • Favorites/Bookmarks
     Webpages you’ve saved in the selected browser. After importing they’ll appear in the ‘Other bookmarks’ folder at the end of the bookmarks bar (Ctrl+B).Want to import bookmarks from another browser besides Firefox or Internet Explorer?
   • Search engines
     Alternative search options that you’ve saved in the selected browser.
   • Saved passwords
     Passwords stored in the browser you’ve chosen for websites you’ve visited.
   • Browsing history
     A list of all the websites you’ve visited while using the selected browser.
7. Click the Import button.
